WhatsApp number banned: how to get it back (and why it happened)

If your WhatsApp Business number has been blocked, two things are true at once: you have lost your main sales channel today, and you probably still can get it back. But the order in which you do things over the next few hours decides whether you recover it in 48 hours or lose the number for good.

This guide is written from the side that sees this constantly: we connect business numbers to WhatsApp through Meta's official platform, and most of the bans we are asked to help with follow the same handful of causes.

First, work out which kind of ban you have

They are not the same thing, and the fix is different. Check where you can still get in:

What you seeWhat it isWhere you appeal
"Your phone number is banned from using WhatsApp" in the appThe number is bannedIn-app appeal form
The number works, but your Business Manager shows a restricted WhatsApp accountThe WhatsApp Business Account is restrictedMeta Business Support
Messages send but never arrive; quality rating shows redNot a ban — quality throttlingFix the cause, no appeal needed
Your provider's dashboard shows the number disconnectedPossibly your provider, not MetaAsk your provider first

That last row matters more than people expect. We have seen "bans" that were a billing problem at an intermediary, resolved in ten minutes. Rule it out before you write anything to Meta.

The five causes, in the order we actually see them

1. An unofficial API or bulk sender. By far the most common. Any tool that connects by scanning a QR code is automating WhatsApp Web, which breaks WhatsApp's Terms of Service. It works for weeks or months, and then it does not. If this is your case, read what unofficial APIs really cost after this.

2. Messaging people who never wrote to you. Uploading a purchased list, or contacts who gave you their number for something else, produces blocks and "report" taps. WhatsApp does not need to read your messages to see the pattern: enough people blocking a number is signal enough.

3. Sending too much, too fast, from a cold number. A brand new number that sends 500 messages on day one looks exactly like spam, even when every recipient asked for it. Volume has to ramp.

4. Content that trips policy. Certain categories are restricted outright — some supplements, gambling, adult content, weapons, certain financial offers. Worth checking WhatsApp's Commerce Policy before assuming it was something else.

5. Sheer bad luck with an automated system. It happens. This is the case where an appeal genuinely reverses things fastest, because there is nothing to fix.

What to do in the first hour

Stop the tool that caused it. If you were on an unofficial sender, disconnect it now. Appealing while the same software is still running is the single most common reason appeals fail — you are asking to be trusted while the behaviour continues.

Do not create a new number and carry on the same way. WhatsApp links devices, payment methods and business assets. A replacement number doing the same thing gets banned faster, and now you have two dead numbers.

Write down what changed in the last 72 hours. New tool, new campaign, imported list, a jump in volume. Your appeal needs this.

Tell your customers where you are. A note on your website and social accounts. People who cannot reach you assume you closed.

How to write an appeal that gets read

Most appeals are one line: "my account was banned by mistake, please restore it." Those get an automated no.

An appeal that works has three parts, in this order:

What happened. Name the cause. "We were using a third-party tool that connected via WhatsApp Web to send order updates." Specific, and it shows you understand the rule you broke.

What you have already fixed. Past tense, not promises. "We disconnected that tool on 3 March and have migrated to the official WhatsApp Business Platform through a Meta Tech Provider."

How this will not happen again. Concrete: opt-in at checkout, no purchased lists, template messages only through the official API.

Keep it under 150 words. Be plain. No legal threats, no capital letters, no talk of how much money you are losing — none of that changes the decision, and hostility makes a human reviewer less inclined to look closely.

One appeal. Submitting five times a day pushes you down the queue and reads as automated. Wait for a reply.

What to expect

Straightforward cases come back within 24 to 48 hours. Complex ones take a week or more. Some never come back — usually repeat offences or restricted categories.

If the in-app appeal fails and you have a WhatsApp Business Account, appeal again through Meta Business Support inside Business Manager. It is a different queue, and for API numbers it is the one that matters.

Making sure it does not happen again

Recovering the number is the short problem. The one worth solving is why you were exposed at all.

Move to the official API. On the WhatsApp Business Platform, automation is what the platform is for. You cannot be banned for using it as designed. This is the single change that removes the whole category of risk.

Get real opt-in. A checkbox at checkout, a form, a first message the customer sent you. Keep the record.

Watch your quality rating. Meta shows it per number in Business Manager. Green is healthy; yellow is a warning you have days to act on. Most bans are visible in that rating before they happen — almost nobody looks.

Ramp volume gradually. Messaging limits rise on their own as your quality holds. Let them.

Answer fast. This one surprises people: numbers that reply quickly and hold real conversations get blocked by recipients far less, and blocks are what drives quality down. Good service is also ban prevention.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a WhatsApp ban last?

There is no fixed term. A ban stays until an appeal reverses it. There is no automatic 30-day expiry, despite what a lot of articles claim.

Can I recover the chats?

Not through the ban appeal. If you had a local backup on the device before the ban, you can restore from it. On the official API, conversation history lives in your platform, not on a phone — another reason the official route is less fragile.

Will a new SIM fix it?

No. Meta associates business assets, payment methods and devices. A new number repeating the same behaviour is usually banned faster.

Does using the official API guarantee I am never banned?

It removes the biggest cause, not every cause. You can still be restricted for messaging people without consent or for restricted content. What it does guarantee is that automating conversations — the thing most people get banned for — is no longer a violation.

Is it worth appealing if I really did break the rules?

Yes, if you have actually fixed it. Appeals that acknowledge the cause and show the fix succeed considerably more often than ones that claim innocence.

If you are moving off an unofficial tool, that is the moment to do it properly. Labia connects your number through Meta's official platform as a Tech Provider, with an AI agent that answers your customers around the clock and a CRM that keeps every conversation. See the plans.
